Nothing really, it just seems insanely quiet in these parts. I guess I'm used to far larger traffic forums in general.

And that makes them very cool in our books indeed!

If you have a unique film event and would like to get the word out, please contact us with your detailed information.]

    LOCATION:

    The Gig Theatre,

(between Duke and Weber - former Hyland Odeon Theatre)
    Kitchener, Nov. 5-7, 7:15 pm

    SUMMARY:

The Forerunner Inspire Festival features films about pioneers, visionaries and courageous innovators who take on environmental, technical and social justice issues in their own way, and make a difference. Out of hundreds of films released this year, only a few have been selected as being the most important social films and personal stories of making a difference. You will learn about important issues, and be inspired by people who have made the world a better place through their work. Join us for….

The World According to Monsanto - Wednesday, November 5, 7;15 The Gig Theatre – $5 donation
This hard hitting documentary paints a vivid picture of Monsanto as a company with a long
track record of environmental crimes and health scandals. The film investigates the company’s
role as a world leader in genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their subsequent government approval amidst reported bribes and payoffs. The director brings to light firsthand accounts of scientists, lawyers, politician, US FDA representatives and individuals who have suffered the company’s toxic activities. Monsanto claims it wants to solve the world’s hunger problem while reducing environmental damage. Where does the truth lie? Rated: PG 14

Toxic Trespass - Thursday, November 6, 7;15 The Gig Theatre – $5 donation
This film is a startling investigation into the connection between environmental pollution and health problems from ADHD to cancer in Children. Meet some of the passionate activists and scientists working for positive change. Much of the film focuses on Windsor and Sarnia yet the themes are universal: pollution knows no boundaries. Rated: General Audiences

Taking Root - Friday, November 7, 7;15 The Gig Theatre – $5 donation
An African story about how one simple act of planting trees changed a nation. This compelling film tells the story of Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai who through the simple act of planting trees in Kenya sparked a powerful political crusade to protect the environment, human rights, and democracy. This a amazing and inspiring story. Rated: General Audiences

The Film Festival continues with new films showing on the 1st Tuesday of the month starting in December-May,

Oooooh... Finally found the "activation" e-mail floating around in my junk folder and am here... (not that that really means much. (Being at the festival does though!)

Joseph... I don't know if this is the right forum (post here, Facebook, or e-mail) to do this in... but I would like to take a larger role in next year's production and of course presentation of WFAC... I would really like to start WFAC Vancouver style and I have absolutely no idea of how to carry it out so I want to be your shadow for either next year or the year after so I have an idea of what's involved. An interesting challenge to do so from over here, but one well worth my time I think. ;)

I saw this film on tv years ago, and it's the saddest film I've ever seen, but brilliant. I bought it on DVD about 3 years ago, but haven't watched it yet--I wanted to see it with my wife and you really have to be "in the right mood" so I think this festival is a perfect situation. Thank you for showing it.

Folks - any coverage of the Festival from the web, or print, or TV, or radio - post it here! Thank you!

  • I have to say those trailers look really very snazzy ^_^ I wonder who was the creative genius that came up with the really cool looking WFAC title/bummer at the end of the trailer(s)?

    lol

On the topic of language (and I apologize if this this has already been mentioned elsewhere), are all the films that are not in English, presented with English subtitles?
    Thanks for the help! MM

Good question, all films will be presented with English subtitles where applicable.

Does "Language- Japanese" (above) - mean the whole movie is ONLY in Japenese? no subtitles, or english soundtrack, right

    • David Ma
      posted 8 months ago

The film will be presented in Japanese, however there will be English subtitles.

thanks David. i notice the rating is AA do you know why? re: a child's viewing
Donkey Xote looks rather violent in the trailor, but appears to be done in a manner that our culture accepts ie. present war as humour, fighting as a solution, the stronger guy wins, etc. Iin my mind, this is a more harmful message for children than presenting the actual terror and real consequences of fighting. Do you know what AA in Grave... is about?

    • David Ma
      posted 8 months ago

I believe Grave of the Fireflies received a 14A rating because it graphically portrays realistic violence and abuse, though not gratuitously.

      Hi, Michele,

The ratings are not about the graphics; it's about emotional impact.

Grave of the Fireflies is a film that resonates. The messages - and the visuals - are powerful, and a child watching this film will benefit greatly from the context that an accompanying adult will be able to provide. It is one of those rare films that will cause viewers of every age to share their own perspectives.

This is why we suggest AA for Grave, and G/PG for a film like Donkey Xote that is much more lighthearted.

thanks so much Joseph. I really want my son to benefit from the quality of films that the festival brings. This helps me to chose within what is appropriate content, and intensity for him, while looking to provide something that will meet his inner quest to explore ideas about war. I now have to consider all that you have commented and decide. Coming to this film would also mean him missing school.

What does it mean when the description above says Language N/A - is it soundtrack with no words, like in the u-tube trailer?
and curious about the ratings - what would be in this that makes it PG, and not G?

    • David Ma
      posted 8 months ago

Egon and Dönci never speak in any intelligible language beyond monosyllabic sounds, hence there is no language used in the film. I can't comment on the rating, but I'm sure Joseph will have a better idea.
